Can International Students Open a Japanese Bank Account?

Top Recommendation

JP Post Bank (Yucho Bank)

This is typically the “very first Japanese passbook” for almost all international students upon arrival. It has a very low application threshold, allowing you to open an account even if you haven’t lived in Japan for 6 months. With the widest network of post office branches and ATMs across Japan, it offers an extremely user-friendly experience.
*Note: Students holding a newly issued Residence Card may need to book an appointment to visit the branch counter in person.

Major Megabanks & Online Banks

If you plan to work part-time or prefer top-tier digital banking, we recommend applying to megabanks such as MUFG (Mitsubishi UFJ) or SMBC (Sumitomo Mitsui) after residing in Japan for 6 months. Additionally, online banks like Rakuten Bank offer low fees and pair exceptionally well with mobile plans.
*Note: Most Japanese companies preferred Megabanks for salary deposits and automatic bill payments.

3 Essential Items for Opening an Account

Residence Card (Zairyu Card)

Must have your registered address printed on it. Upon arriving in Japan, you must register your address at your local ward/city office within 14 days before opening an account.

Student ID Card

Official proof of your enrollment and student status. If official IDs aren’t issued during your first week, bring your official Certificate of Admission as a substitute.

Personal Seal / Stamp (Hanko/Inkan)

Although Japan is moving toward a seal-free system, personal seals remain a useful backup tool for foreign applicants during verification. We recommend having a round seal with your surname or Katakana name prepared before traveling.

The Catch-22 for New Students:
Phone Numbers & Bank Accounts

In Japan, it is difficult to sign up for a traditional phone plan without a bank account; however, banks often refuse to open an account without a local Japanese phone number for SMS authentication. This catch-22 is a major headache for international students.

OKINI Student Tip: First, sign up for a provider/SIM card that supports foreign credit card payments (such as LINEMO). Once you obtain a phone number, proceed to open your bank account.

Standard Step-by-Step Account Opening Process

1. Take a Queue Ticket

Visit a local bank branch near your residence, take a ticket, and tell the teller: “Kōza wo kaisetsu shitai desu” (I would like to open an account).

2. Fill Out Application

Complete the application form under staff guidance. Carefully fill in your legal name (matching your Residence Card), Katakana phonetic spelling, Japanese address, and the purpose of opening the account.

3. Identity & Status Check

Staff will copy and inspect your Residence Card to verify your visa status, period of stay, and check SMS verification sent to your phone.

4. Set PIN Code

Enter your custom 4-digit PIN for ATM access. Some branches issue physical passbooks on the same day, while cash cards (ATM cards) are mailed to your address within about a week.
